The Collaborative approach

To address this, Sailing for the Disabled partnered with Disability Awareness, a specialist training provider, alongside Governance People Limited.

The collaboration brought together:

  • Professional instructional design and eLearning delivery in Governance People
  • Subject-matter expertise in Disability Awareness
  • A shared commitment to inclusion and community impact from all parties

The Solution

A bespoke online Disability Awareness Training course was developed specifically for Sailing for the Disabled.

The solution included:

  • An accessible, self-paced online course
  • Clear, practical guidance tailored to the charity’s sailing context
  • Training suitable for both new volunteers and existing members
  • A format that could be revisited at any time for refreshers

A brand new, fully-hosted LMS was deployed to deliver the course to the charity’s volunteers.

Outcomes and impact

The new online training package has delivered immediate and longer-term benefits:

  • Improved confidence among volunteers
  • More consistent understanding of disability awareness
  • A scalable training model that supports future growth

It is hoped the initiative will also encourage other organisations on the Island to expand their understanding of disability awareness and explore accessible online training solutions.

Why this collaboration worked

This collaboration succeeded because it combined:

  • Deep subject-matter expertise
  • Professional eLearning design
  • A shared commitment to accessibility and inclusion
  • A values-led, pro bono approach that prioritised impact over profit

For Sailing for the Disabled, it delivered a practical, sustainable training solution. For Governance People, it demonstrated how digital learning can be used to support community organisations as well as regulated industries.
